It is a large deer of the order Artiodactyla, family Cervidae, and is also called the elk. It is widely distributed, including northwestern North America, Canada, northeastern China, Gansu Province, the Tianshan Mountains, and Mongolia. It reaches a body length of 180-240 cm, shoulder height of 130-140 cm, and weight of 188-500 kg. Its summer fur is yellowish brown, with dark brown face, legs, and neck. It has a large whitish patch around its tail. Its winter fur is gray-brown, consisting of long top hair and curly undercoat, and is dark brown on the face, legs, and neck. Its mating season is in autumn, when it forms a harem, but in winter it forms a large herd of both males and females, and in spring the herd splits into a herd of males and a herd of several dozen females and their calves. They feed in the early morning and evening, moving to cool mountain areas in summer and lowlands in winter. They can reach a speed of about 46 kilometers per hour and are good swimmers. Their natural predators are pumas, wolves, grizzly bears, coyotes, and lynx. They give birth to one or two babies in May or June. The gestation period is 249 to 262 days. They live for 15 to 20 years.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱偶蹄(ぐうてい)目シカ科の動物。大形のシカでオオジカともよばれる。北アメリカ北西部、カナダ、中国東北部、甘粛(かんしゅく)省、天山(てんざん)山脈、モンゴルと分布は広い。体長180～240センチメートル、肩高130～140センチメートル、体重188～500キログラムに達する。夏毛は黄褐色で、顔、四肢、頸部(けいぶ)は暗褐色。尾の周りに白っぽい大きな斑(はん)がある。冬毛は長い上毛と縮れた下毛からなり、灰褐色で、顔、四肢、頸部は暗褐色となる。発情期は秋で、この時期にはハレム形式となるが、冬季は雌雄混合の大群となり、春季には群れは分かれて、雄群と、雌と子の数十頭の群れとなる。早朝、夕刻に採食し、夏は涼しい山地に、冬は低地に移動する。時速46キロメートルほどのスピードをもち、水泳も巧みである。天敵はピューマ、オオカミ、ハイイログマ、コヨーテ、オオヤマネコなどである。5～6月に1～2子を産む。妊娠期間249～262日。寿命15～20年。
