A book in the Apocrypha of the Old Testament. It is a fictional war story. Holofernes, a general of the Assyrian king Nebuchadnezzar, besieged the Jewish town of Bethulia (a fictional town?) during his western campaign. Just before the town fell, a devout widow named Judith stood up among the panicked citizens, and used her beauty to deceive Holofernes, getting him drunk and decapitating him, thus defeating the Assyrian army and saving her town and her homeland. Judith is the feminine form of "Jew." A work written in the 2nd or 1st century BCE that aimed to raise national consciousness. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
