...The readers were the Ten Zen Masters of the Naiguho and monks with wisdom and practice, and the audience was mainly scholars of the Nanto Rokushu sect, with scholars from various temples invited to attend. In 813 (Kōnin 4), on the 14th, the day of the final pilgrimage, eleven scholars of high virtue were invited to the Shishinden Hall to hold further debates, which became a regular event and came to be known as Uchirongi. After the Kamakura period, the event declined due to conflicts between the Northern and Southern Courts, and was discontinued in the Muromachi period....
