A southern constellation that reaches its highest point in the sky in the evening of mid-January. Its approximate position is at right ascension 3:50 and declination -30°. Stars of magnitude 3 or less line up from near Rigel in Orion toward the south, leading to its main star Acherna, which is located at declination -60°. Acherna, which means "where the river ends" in Arabic, is one of the brightest stars in the sky, but cannot be seen from the main island of Japan. It is a subgiant star with a magnitude of 0.5 and a spectral type of B3, and is 650 times brighter than the Sun, located about 140 light years from Earth. O ² is a triplet located 16.3 light years from Earth, with a yellow main sequence star with a magnitude of 4.42 and a spectral type of K1, orbited by a white dwarf star with a magnitude of 9.5 and a red dwarf star with a spectral type of M4 with a magnitude of 11.1. The constellation Eridanus is named after the Greek river god Eridanus or the ancient name of the Po River in Italy, and is 10.7 light years away from the Sun. It was chosen, along with Tau Ceti, as a representative of nearby stars that may have planetary systems.

1月中旬の宵に南中する南天の星座。概略位置は赤経 3時50分，赤緯－30°。オリオン座のリゲル近くから 3等以下の星が南に向かって並び，赤緯－60°近くにある主星アケルナーにいたる。アケルナーはアラビア語の「川の尽きるところ」の意味で，全天最輝星の一つであるが，日本の本州からは見えない。この星は光度 0.5等，スペクトル型 B3の準巨星で太陽の 650倍の明るさをもち，地球から約 140光年の距離にある。o²星は地球から 16.3光年にある三重連星で，光度 4.42等，スペクトル型 K1の黄色の主系列星の周囲を 9.5等の白色矮星と 11.1等のスペクトル型 M4の赤色矮星が回っている。ε星は 10.7光年の距離にあり，惑星系の存在の可能性がある近距離恒星の代表として，くじら座τ星とともにオズマ計画の観測対象に選ばれた。エリダヌス座の名はティコ・ブラーエの星表に載っており，エリダヌスとはギリシアの川の神またはイタリアのポー川の古代の名である。
