Born November 5, 1927. Joined the Institute of Statistical Mathematics in 1952, and became its director in 1986. Known for his research into statistical analysis, he proposed the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC). He promoted the development of the practical computer program TIMSAC. Received the Japan Statistical Society Prize in 1996 and the Kyoto Prize in 2006. Died August 4, 2009. Age 81. Born in Shizuoka Prefecture. Graduated from the University of Tokyo.
