Born: March 1, 1914, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma [Died] April 16, 1994. New York, New York. American black novelist. Full name: Ralph Waldo Ellison. After graduating from his hometown's public school, he received a state scholarship to study music at the Tuskegee Industrial Normal School, a vocational school for blacks in Alabama. He moved to New York with the intention of becoming a composer, but met the black writer Richard Wright there, who encouraged him to start writing novels. In 1952, he published his novel Invisible Man, which took seven years to complete, and won the National Book Award. This work symbolizes the loss of identity of blacks, and is considered one of the most representative American novels after World War II. He later lectured at universities around the country and contributed to various magazines. His works include a collection of essays, Shadow and Act (1964).
