Arab nationalism

A movement that seeks to realize Arab unity beyond national boundaries, against the backdrop of Arab national consciousness. It became particularly active in response to the sense of crisis caused by the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, and gave rise to the Nasserist and Ba'athist (Ba'ath Party) movements following the defeat in the First Arab-Israeli War in the same year. In 1958, the first attempt at Arab national unification was the creation of the United Arab Republic through the union of Egypt and Syria. After that, following the defeat in the Third Arab-Israeli War, the "Arab Cause," which strengthens cooperation on the premise of existing nations rather than seeking a unified state, became mainstream. However, after the end of the Cold War and the Gulf War, Arab countries have been increasingly inclined to implement policies centered on national interests.

アラブの民族的自覚を背景として，国家の枠を超えてアラブの一体性を実現しようとする運動。特に1948年のイスラエル建国に危機を感じて活発化し，同年の第１次中東戦争の敗北によりナーセル主義，バース主義（バース党）の運動を生んだ。アラブ国家統一の最初の試みとして1958年には，エジプト・シリアの合邦によるアラブ連合共和国を生んだ。その後第３次中東戦争の敗戦を機に，統一国家を希求するより既存の国家を前提として連携を強化する〈アラブの大義〉が主流となる。しかし，冷戦の終焉と湾岸戦争を経て，アラブ諸国では国益中心の政策を打ち出す傾向が強まっている。
