A small island at the mouth of the Hudson River in New York City, USA. It is about 1.5 km southwest of Manhattan, and has an area of only 0.11 km2. Between 1892 and 1954, the United States Immigration Service had a facility on the island, and immigration inspections were carried out for about 12 million immigrants. It was called the "gateway to the New World." About 500 m southwest of the island is Liberty Island, where the Statue of Liberty stands.
