It is an island in the Hibikinada Sea in the southwest of Yamaguchi Prefecture. It belongs to Shimonoseki City, 7 km west of Yoshimo Port, and has an area of 2.35 square kilometers. It is a semi-agricultural, semi-fishing village, and in the early modern period it was the territory of the Chofu Domain, a branch of the Hagi (Choshu) Domain. Records from 1849 (Kaei 2) indicate that there were 19 houses. The coastal waters, where the warm Tsushima Current flows, are good fishing grounds, and fixed net fishing for horse mackerel and yellowtail, and single-line fishing for mackerel and squid are popular. The Yamanokami Shinto Ritual, an agricultural ritual held once every seven years, is a nationally designated Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property.
