...There are also folk examples of scarecrows being worshipped as vessels for the rice field god. In Nagano Prefecture, an event is held on the night of the 10th day of the 10th month of the lunar calendar, called Kakashiage or Somen-Toshikori, in which a scarecrow is dressed in a straw raincoat and hat, holds a broom and a rake in each hand, and is worshiped with offerings of rice cakes and forked radishes. In the Suwa region of the same prefecture, this day is said to be the day the scarecrow god ascends to heaven, and in the Minami-Azumi region, it is said to be the day the scarecrow finishes guarding the rice fields and becomes a mountain god.
