A canal in northwestern Russia. It runs from the city of Belomorsk on the White Sea side through rivers and lakes, and through an artificial cut (37 km excavated) to the city of Povenets at the northern end of Lake Onega. It is 227 km long. It has 19 locks and other facilities, and the distance between St. Petersburg and Belomorsk is 4,000 km shorter than the distance traveled by going around the open sea.
