Araremon

Japanese:
Araremon

Like cobblestones and checkered patterns, this pattern is made up of continuous square patterns running vertically and horizontally. Small checkered patterns in particular are called arare patterns. As it is the simplest form of geometric pattern, it has been used since ancient times all over the world. In Japan, the brocades of the Shosoin Repository have floral patterns scattered over an arare ground, and it is known that this pattern was used as early as the Nara period, but it was not until the Heian period that this pattern began to be fully appreciated. In particular, the arare pattern, which is woven as a raised pattern on an arare ground, is the most representative of yusoku patterns. The arare pattern was also often used as a background pattern on tea ceremony kettles.
