Town Headman - Town Headman

Japanese: 町名主 - まちなぬし

A town official in the Edo period, more accurately called a headman. The center of Edo city administration. Under the machi-doshiyori, their duties covered the entire town administration, such as conveying laws and regulations, reviewing the status of residence, writing colophons for petitions and lawsuits, and maintaining public order. The position was hereditary and they were not allowed to have other occupations, and received a salary from the town. There were over 200 of them, and each person ruled over several towns. They were equivalent to the machi-doshiyori of Osaka.

正しくは名主。江戸の市政の中心。町年寄の下にあり，職務は法令の伝達，人別改，願書・訴状の奥書，治安の維持など町政全般に及んだ。世襲で他業を許されず，町から給料をうけた。二百数十名おり１人で数町を支配。大坂の町年寄に相当した。
