A town official in the Edo period, more accurately called a headman. The center of Edo city administration. Under the machi-doshiyori, their duties covered the entire town administration, such as conveying laws and regulations, reviewing the status of residence, writing colophons for petitions and lawsuits, and maintaining public order. The position was hereditary and they were not allowed to have other occupations, and received a salary from the town. There were over 200 of them, and each person ruled over several towns.
