Queen of England during the Tudor dynasty (reigned 1558-1603). Daughter of Henry VIII and his second queen, Anne Boleyn. During the reign of her half-sister Mary I, she suffered hardships as she was denied the right to inherit the throne, but she ascended to the throne at the age of 25. In religion, she adopted a moderate policy, promulgating the Act of Supremacy and the Act of Uniformity, establishing the Church of England and oppressing both Catholics and Puritans. She tried to avoid being involved in international conflicts as much as possible, refusing a marriage proposal from King Philip II of Spain and remaining single her whole life, but she secretly assisted Protestants in the Netherlands and France, and in 1588 repelled the attack of the Spanish Armada, enhancing the country's prestige. In domestic affairs, she actively promoted the middle class, dealt with difficult social conditions through many laws, and celebrated the "Jolly England." With the death of the Queen, the Tudor dynasty came to an end, and James I, the son of Mary Stuart, her lifelong rival, ascended to the throne, establishing the House of Stuart. →Related topics: Ireland | Earl of Essex | Elizabethan drama | Camden | Spencer | Cecil | Absolute monarchy | Tallis | Apprenticeship Act | Drake | Byrd | Mary Stuart | Earl of Leicester | Law | Raleigh Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
