A general term for annelids belonging to the family Serpulidae of the class Polychaeta. This name comes from the fact that a shell cap on the gill crest on the head resembles a hairpin. Currently, about 60 species from 27 genera are known in Japan. Serpulids secrete calcareous matter to create tubes in which they live their entire lives. The body is divided into the gill crest, thorax, and abdomen. Larger ones can reach a body length of 7 to 8 cm, but most are around 3 cm. The gill crest has several to several dozen pairs of gill filaments arranged in a semicircular or spiral shape, one of which becomes a special shell stalk with a shell cap at its tip.
