Erichsen test

A material test carried out to check the formability of sheet metal in press working. It is a test method published in 1912 by Norwegian engineer Abraham Marthinitts Erichsen (1876-1952) and is still widely used today. An Erichsen testing machine is used for this test, in which a disk-shaped or strip-shaped test piece is placed between a blank holder and a die, and a hemispherical punch is pressed into it. The depth to which the punch penetrates the test piece until a crack appears that penetrates from the front to the back is expressed in millimeters, and this value is called the Erichsen value. The Erichsen value increases with the thickness of the plate, even for the same material, and the material standards for thin plates specify the Erichsen value according to the thickness of the plate. There is also a conical cup test that can be used to test the press workability of thin plates. This method involves placing a thin disk into a conical die, pressing the center into the die with a spherical punch, and determining the average diameter of the upper edge of the test piece when the bottom of the test piece cracks (conical cup value). The smaller this value, the better the formability.

板材のプレス加工における成形性を調べるために行われる材料試験。ノルウェーの技術者であるエリクセンAbraham Marthinitts Erichsen（1876―1952）が1912年に発表した試験法で、現在でも広く使用されている。この試験にはエリクセン試験機が用いられ、円板状または帯板状の試験片をしわ押さえとダイスとの間に置き、先端が半球状のポンチを押し込んでいく。試験片の表から裏まで貫通した亀裂(きれつ)の生ずるまでのポンチの進入した深さをミリメートル単位で表し、この数値をエリクセン値とよぶ。エリクセン値は同一材質でも板の厚さが厚いほど大きくなり、薄板の材料規格には板の厚さに応じてエリクセン値を規定している。なお、薄板のプレス加工性に関する試験法としてはこのほかにコニカルカップ試験がある。これは、円板状の薄板を円錐(えんすい)形ダイスの中に入れ、中央を球状ポンチで押し込み、試験片底部が割れを生じたときの試験片上縁部の平均直径の値（コニカルカップ値）を求める方法で、これが小さいほど成形性がよいとする。
