...The base for mountaineering and sightseeing is Huaraz. The river valley between the Cordillera Blanca and the Cordillera Negra (Black Mountains) to the west is called Callejón de Huaylas, and is a tourist destination known as the Switzerland of Peru. During the great Peruvian earthquake in 1970, a glacier on the west side of Huascarán collapsed, and the town of Yungay, which is located in a similar position to Mount Fuji and Gotemba, was completely buried under a mudslide, and about 20,000 lives were lost.
