A shell mound from the late Jomon period is located in Machihata, Heijo, Mishou Town, Minamiuwa District, Ehime Prefecture. The shell mound is made of saltwater shells and is piled up on a plateau at an altitude of 6 to 7 meters, about 1 km from the mouth of the Sozu River, which flows west nearby. It was discovered in 1891, and several investigations have been reported since then. Excavations in 1954 unearthed human bones, late Jomon pottery, chipped stone axes, ground stone axes, shell rings, bone needles, large fish bones such as tuna, and small horse teeth. Stone arrowheads, stone weights, and concave stones are also known to have been found among the older collected materials. The late Jomon pottery discovered at this site is classified into five types, and Type 1 pottery, which is characterized by the Jomon technique of erasing, makes up the majority of the shell mound in terms of quantity.
