In the expression of genetic traits, the genetic code copied into messenger RNA (mRNA) is converted into a sequence of amino acids to create a protein. Translation is the transfer of foreign information from a nucleotide sequence to an amino acid sequence, as opposed to "replication" from DNA to DNA and "transcription" of the nucleotide sequence itself from DNA to mRNA. Translation is carried out according to the codon rule, which states that the order of three nucleotides corresponds to each amino acid.
