Jubako - Jubako

Japanese:
Jubako - Jubako

A type of food container, it is made up of square boxes of the same size stacked on top of each other, and many are decorated with makie (lacquerware) and other techniques. Originally, food containers called "jikiro" were introduced from China, and jubako evolved from these. The word "jubako" first appeared in the "Manjuya Honsetsuyoshu" at the end of the Muromachi period, which means that it has been in use since at least that time. At the beginning of the Edo period, it was used as a container for serving fish at banquets, and was also taken out for outdoor outings. However, from the mid-Edo period, ceramic plates and bowls became widespread, and a portable jubako called a "tsuke jubako" was invented, and the original jubako began to be used for the same purposes as it is today, such as for New Year's, Hinamatsuri, and as gifts.
