[died] about 877. A representative philosopher and mystic of the Carolingian Renaissance. He visited Paris after Alcuin and was well received by Charles II. He was twice convicted for his De praedestinatione (On Predestination) during the Gottschalk controversy, but he continued his academic life and translated the work of Pseudo-Dionysius into Latin, and based on this he wrote De divisione naturae (On the Division of Nature), completing his monistic worldview. His theories, which were strongly colored by Neoplatonism, were often questioned from the standpoint of Catholic tradition, but his works had an excellent metaphysical system and had a great influence on mystics. He also wrote commentaries on Boethius and the Gospel of John, laying the foundations of scholastic methodology.
