Kashima Gosenkoku

[New rice field development]
In the early days, new rice fields were developed actively. The Karigane Levee was built by the two generations of magistrates, Furugori Shigemasa and Shigetoshi, and the beautiful rice fields of Kashima 5,000 koku were expanded. In the lower reaches of the Oi River, boat-shaped houses were built to protect the land from flooding by using stone walls and standing trees, and villages were built around rings. On the other hand, new rice fields were contracted out to merchants from Edo and Sunpu.
