1802‐72 A leading figure in the Romanian cultural revival movement and writer. He studied at the Greek School and Saint Sava School in Bucharest, and later became the school's principal. His ideas were characterized by a strong awareness of Latin culture, as seen in his attempt to convert the Romanian alphabet into Latin characters. His activities ranged from creative writing, translation, and publishing to the founding of literary societies and political activities. During the Wallachian Revolution of 1848, he was one of the representatives of the revolutionary government, and spent ten years in exile after the revolution.
