Hosokawa paper

Japanese:
Hosokawa paper
A strong, thick, handmade washi paper made from paper mulberry. It is also called "Hosokawashi." It was once produced in Hosokawa, Koyasu-cho, Wakayama Prefecture. Later, production moved to Saitama Prefecture, and it became one of the "Ogawa washi" produced in Ogawa-machi, Hiki-gun, Saitama Prefecture. Ogawa washi is produced in Ogawa-machi, Hiki-gun, Saitama Prefecture, and Higashichichibu-mura, Chichibu-gun. The origin of washi production in Ogawa dates back to the Nara period, but it was only after Edo became the economic center that the three counties of Hiki, Chichibu, and Obusuma, centered around Ogawa, developed into a major washi production area in the Edo period. Various types of paper were made, but the most representative was Hosokawa paper. It became famous when Ogawa began to produce paper (Hosokawa paper) of the same quality as the "Hosokawa hosho" paper made in Hosokawa, Koyasu-cho, Wakayama Prefecture. After that, production in Wakayama was discontinued, and the technique of "Hosokawa paper" was passed down only in Saitama. In 1978, it was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan. In 2014, it was registered as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO together with Sekishu-banshi (Shimane Prefecture) and Honminoshi (Gifu Prefecture) as "Washi: Japanese Handmade Paper Crafts."
