(1) A criminal sanction for a criminal act, a type of property penalty in which a certain amount is forced to be paid to the national treasury. Under the current Penal Code, a penalty is a property penalty of between 1,000 and 10,000 yen, and is distinguished from a fine in terms of the amount (Penal Code, 17). Those who do not pay the penalty in full will be detained in a workhouse for between one and 30 days. A penalty is different from a non-penal fine, which is a type of administrative penalty. (2) (a) One of the penalties in the Kamakura period, another name for negligence. (b) One of the main penalties in the old Penal Code that came into force in 1882, a property penalty imposed for minor crimes. The penalty was between 5 sen and 1 yen 95 sen.
