A canal of great importance in the history of the development of the United States, linking Albany on the Hudson River with Buffalo on the shores of Lake Erie. Its total length is about 544 km. Construction began in 1817, with a portion completed in 1820, opening in 1825, and the entire canal completed in 1827. It was important as a route connecting the Great Lakes region with the Atlantic coast, but with the rise of rail transport in the second half of the 19th century, its function rapidly declined. From 1905 to 1918, it was renovated by New York State and became part of the New York State Barge Canal System, linking the Great Lakes with the Hudson River. → Related articles New York | Hudson River | Utica Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
