A canal of great importance in the history of the development of the United States, linking Albany on the Hudson River with Buffalo on the shores of Lake Erie. Its total length is about 544 km. Construction began in 1817, with a portion completed in 1820, opening in 1825, and the entire canal completed in 1827. It was important as a route connecting the Great Lakes region with the Atlantic coast, but with the rise of rail transport in the second half of the 19th century, its function rapidly declined. From 1905 to 1918, it was renovated by New York State and became part of the New York State Barge Canal System, linking the Great Lakes with the Hudson River.

ハドソン川に沿うオルバニーとエリー湖湖岸のバッファローを結ぶ，米国発展史上きわめて重要な運河。全長約544km。1817年に建設が始まり1820年に一部が完成，1825年開通，1827年全部が完成。五大湖地方と大西洋岸を結ぶ連絡路として重要であったが，19世紀後半，鉄道輸送が盛んになると，その機能は急速に衰えた。1905年―1918年ニューヨーク州の手で改修され，五大湖とハドソン川を結ぶニューヨーク州バージ運河網の一部となった。
