Emon

Japanese:
Emon
A monk from Northern Qi during the Northern and Southern Dynasties period in China. Also known as Huiwen. His surname was Gao. His birth and death years and place of birth are unknown, but with Nanyue Huisi as his subordinate, he is considered the second patriarch of the Tendai sect. Through Nagarjuna's works, which had been translated earlier by Kumarajiva of Yaoqin, he practiced Zen meditation, realised the principle of the one-mind, three-viewpoints, and summed up the doctrine. Through Huisi, Tiantai Zhiyi synthesised this, and founded the Tendai sect with Lotus Sutra Samadhi as its axis. The one-mind, three-viewpoints are the experience of the three truths of emptiness, provisionality, and the middle ground with a single mind, and are the basis of Tendai studies. [Yanagida Seizan]
