Born: October 12, 1880 in Brest [Died] July 8, 1913. Canadian author born near Chapleau, Ontario. After working as a journalist for several years in England, he moved to Canada in 1911. After experiencing winter life on the French Canadian frontier, he finished Maria Chapdelaine (The White Virgin) early in 1913, and died in a train accident that summer. This beautiful romance, about people living in the Canadian wilderness, was serialized in the Paris magazine Le Temps the following year and received great acclaim, and was published in Montreal in 1915. His other works include Battling Malone, the Pugiliste (1926) and Monsieur Ripois et la Némésis (50).
