materia medica (English spelling)

...A branch of pharmacy that studies the relationship (interaction) between drugs and the living body. It consists of materia medica, which studies the drugs themselves, such as their origin, manufacturing method, chemical structure, and physicochemical properties; pharmacodynamics, which studies the pharmacological action of drugs, such as their effects on the living body, their sites of action, and their mechanism of action; and pharmacokinetics, which studies the movement of drugs within the body, such as their absorption into the blood, distribution to each organ throughout the body, metabolism within the body, and excretion from the body. It also includes the study of the mechanism of the living body, such as the use of drugs as a research tool.
