Kujukushima Islands

Japanese: 九十九島 - くじゅうくしま

A group of small islands scattered along the west coast of the Kitamatsuura Peninsula in northwest Nagasaki Prefecture. There are a few inhabited islands, such as Takashima (Sasebo City), but most are uninhabited. This scenic spot is the center of Saikai National Park, and many tourists come on sightseeing boats that run between Kashimae in Sasebo City and Hirado Port. The views from Yumiharidake, Eboshidake, and Ishidake Observatory in Sasebo City are particularly beautiful. The Kujukushima islands off the coast of Shimabara City in the Ariake Sea are called "Tsukumojima." The area is 8.44 ^km2 .

Kujuku Islands

A group of islands in Shimabara Bay, southeastern Nagasaki Prefecture. Part of Shimabara City. Formed in 1792 by the collapse of Mt. Mayu (819m) (→ Collapse of Mt. Mayu on Mount Unzen), the group is made of pyroclastic debris. The strata are soft andesite, which is easily eroded by waves. There were once 59 islands, but now there are only 16. The scenic spot is also known as "Shimabara Matsushima." The Kujuku Islands on the west coast of the Kita Matsuura Peninsula in Nagasaki Prefecture are also called "Kujukushima."

長崎県北西部，北松浦半島の西岸に散在する小島群。高島 (佐世保市) など若干の有人島があるが，多くは無人島。西海国立公園の中心をなす景勝地で，佐世保市鹿子前 (かしまえ) と平戸港を結ぶ観光船などによる観光客が多い。佐世保市の弓張岳，烏帽子岳，石岳展望台などからの眺望は特に美しい。なお，有明海の島原市沿岸にある九十九島は「つくもじま」と呼ぶ。面積 8.44km²。

長崎県南東部，島原湾に浮かぶ島嶼群。島原市に属する。寛政4（1792）年の眉山（819m）の崩壊（→雲仙岳眉山崩壊）により形成され，火山砕屑物からなる。地層は軟弱な安山岩で波食を受けやすく，かつて 59島あったが，16島に減少した。「島原松島」とも呼ばれる景勝地。なお，長崎県北松浦半島西岸にある九十九島は「くじゅうくしま」と呼ぶ。
