Bito clan

Japanese: 尾藤氏 - びとううじ

A medieval samurai family. It is said that it began when Kinsumi, a descendant of Fujiwara Hidesato, became the governor of Owari and took the name Bito. A few generations after Kinsumi, during the generation of Bito Gotomohiro's son, the family split into two branches: Bito Ta Tomonobu, who initially served Minamoto no Yoshinaka, then joined Minamoto no Yoritomo and ruled Nakano Mimaki Manor in Shinano Province, and Tanaka and Ikeda Manor in Kii Province, and Bito Tsugutomobu, who played an active role on the side of the Hojo clan in the Hiki War in 1203 (Kennin 3). Tomonobu's son Tomohira lived in Ikeda Manor and is thought to have continued to use the name Ikeda for generations thereafter, but Chikage's son Kagetsuna and his descendants played active roles as vassals of the main line of the Hojo clan.

中世の武家。藤原秀郷の流れをくむ公澄が尾張守となって尾藤を称したのにはじまるという。公澄の数代後の尾藤五知広の子の代に，はじめ源義仲に属しのち源頼朝に参じて信濃国中野御牧，紀伊国田中･池田両荘を領した尾藤太知宣の一流と，1203年(建仁3)の比企合戦で北条方として活躍する尾藤次知景の一流とにわかれる。知宣の子知平は池田荘に住しその後は代々池田を称したと思われるが，知景の子景綱とその子孫は北条氏嫡流家の被官として活躍している。
