…Fustat was a large commercial river port in itself, but when Cairo was founded, Maks al-Maks was born as the nearest outer port. As the economic center shifted from Fustat to Cairo, the importance of Maks increased, but as the riverbed shifted westward, Maks fell into disuse, and the port of Būlāq developed on its western bank, and the area along the road connecting it to Cairo also gradually opened up. Ezbekiyah became a key point connecting the center of Cairo with the port of Būlāq, an outlet to the Mediterranean Sea, and gradually gained importance during the Ottoman Empire, and when the French army occupied Egypt at the end of the 18th century, Napoleon established his headquarters here. …
