Giant Isopod - Giant Isopod

A marine animal belonging to the family Acanthopodidae, order Isopoda, class Crustacea. It is a large species, reaching a body length of 15 cm. It is endemic to Japan, living on sandy and muddy bottoms at depths of around 200 meters from the coast of the Boso Peninsula to Tosa Bay. Its body is oval, with a hard shell and a raised back. From the sides to the underside of the head, there are long triangular compound eyes with about 3,000 ommatidia. Following the head are seven thoracic segments, five abdominal segments, and a caudal abdominal segment, with a basal plate on the second to seventh thoracic segments. The thorax has seven pairs of legs, the first three of which are claw-like grasping limbs, and the last four pairs are rod-like walking limbs. It is carnivorous. There are 11 known species of closely related species in the same genus, but the giant isopod B. giganteus , found in the Gulf of Mexico, the Arabian Sea, and the Bay of Bengal, reaches a body length of 45 cm and is the largest species of isopod.

節足動物門甲殻綱等脚目スナホリムシ科に属する海産動物。大形種で、体長15センチメートルに達する。日本特産で、房総半島沖から土佐湾までの水深200メートル内外の砂泥底にすむ。体は小判形で、甲が硬く、背面が盛り上がっている。頭部の側面から下面にわたって、約3000の個眼が集まった長三角形の複眼がある。頭部に続いて7胸節、5腹節、腹尾節があり、第2～第7胸節に基節板がある。胸部には7対の脚(あし)があるが、前3対は鉤(かぎ)づめ状の把握肢(はあくし)、後ろ4対は棒状の歩行肢である。肉食性。同属の近縁種は11種知られているが、メキシコ湾、アラビア海、ベンガル湾に分布するダイオウグソクムシB. giganteusは、体長45センチメートルに達し、等脚類中の最大種である。
