A powerful clan in Hitachi Province from the late ancient period to the Middle Ages. It is said that Kunika, the son of Emperor Kanmu's great-grandson Takamochi, was appointed Hitachi Daijo and settled there. Kunika's son Sadamori defeated his kinsman Masakado in the Taira no Masakado Rebellion and built up influence in the region. His son Koremoto (also said to be the son of Sadamori's younger brother Shigemori) and grandson Tamemichi inherited the position of Hitachi Daijo and took the title Daijo as their own surname. From the 12th century onwards, the clan controlled almost the entire southern half of Hitachi Province. At the beginning of the Kamakura period, the main branch of the clan, Daijo Yoshimoto, and his brother Shimotsuma Hiromoto, were ousted, and the clan of Shugo Hatta Tomoie advanced into their territories, but the position of Daijo was inherited by a branch of the family, Baba Sukenori.
