Born: July 2, 1821, Amherst, Nova Scotia [Died] October 30, 1915. Bexleyheath, Kent. Canadian politician. Prime Minister (in office 1896). He studied medicine and became a successful practicing physician, but was elected to the Nova Scotia House of Representatives in 1855 and entered politics. A member of the Conservative Party, he served as Premier of Nova Scotia from 1864 to 1867. Despite the strong opposition of his political rival J. Howe, he promoted the unification of British colonies in North America and Confederation, becoming one of the founding fathers of the country. In 1970 he joined the JA MacDonald cabinet, and in 1978 he became Minister of Public Works (Railways and Canals), promoting the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1884 he went to London as Canada's High Commissioner (Ambassador), and remained in this position until 1896, except for a period when he served as Minister of Finance in the MacDonald cabinet from 1887 to 1888. In the same year, the Conservative Party, which was struggling with leadership difficulties, recalled him to the position of Prime Minister, but six months later the Conservative Party lost the general election and handed power to the Liberal Party. He served as leader of the Conservative Party until 1900, when he was defeated in the election and retired from politics. Tupperware |
