? ‐272 The second king of the Sassanid Empire. Reigned 240-272. Son of Ardashir I. Whereas his father was the "King of Iranian Kings," he called himself "King of Iranian and non-Iranian Kings." According to the inscriptions at Naqsh-i-Rustam, which records his exploits, his empire stretched from northern Mesopotamia and Armenia in the west to the borders of Tashkent and Kashgar, including the lands of the Kushans in the east. He won three wars against Rome, and his third campaign, the battle near Edessa (260), in which he captured the Roman Emperor Valerian, is commemorated in rock reliefs at Naqsh-i-Rustam and Bishāpur.
