Western-style painter. Born in Osaka City on October 13, 1887. Entered the Japanese Painting Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1907 (Meiji 40), and later studied at the Haramachi Western Painting Institute of the Hakuba-kai (White Horse Society), before switching to the Western Painting Department and graduating in 1914 (Taisho 3). Returning to Osaka, he exhibited at the Inten Western Painting Department, and in 1916 won the Chogyu Prize for his first Nikaten exhibition for "N's Family," and the following year won the Nika Prize for "Portrait of a Girl with a Plum Blossom," becoming a Nikakai associate. Traveled to Europe from 1926 to 1927, traveling to Germany and southern France, and became a Nikakai member the year after returning to Japan. Together with other Kansai-based Nikakai members such as Nabei Katsuyuki, he established the Shinanobashi Western Painting Institute in Osaka to train the next generation, and at the beginning of the Showa era took a leading role in the newly launched Kansai Western Painting Exhibition. From then on, he produced more and more nudes, and by utilizing the volume of his works, such as "Reclining Nude" and "Nude on a Chinese Bed," and the viscosity and brilliance of oil paint, he established a unique style of painting in modern Japanese nude painting. He also excelled in glass painting, and demonstrated his versatility by illustrating Junichiro Tanizaki's newspaper novel "The Tadekufumushi" and other works, and publishing essay collections such as "Naraju Miscellany," "Blessed Landscapes," and "Important Atmospheres." He died on February 13, 1931, at the age of 44.
