Fang-xiang (English spelling)

Japanese: 方響 - ほうきょう（英語表記）fang-xiang

An ancient Chinese instrument. Sixteen rectangular iron plates with 16 pitches are hung on a wooden rack in two rows of eight, one above the other, and melodies are struck with two mallets. It was used at banquets and music at the imperial court, and was also introduced to Korea and Japan. It has disappeared in China and Japan, but is still used in Korean gagaku today. In Japan, nine iron plates remain as remnants in the Shosoin Repository, and replicas have been made based on these and descriptions in various documents.

古代中国の楽器。高低 16律をもつ長方形の鉄板 16枚を，木製の架に8枚ずつ上下2段に掛け，2本打棒で旋律を打鳴らす。宮廷の宴饗楽に用いられ，朝鮮や日本にも伝えられた。中国，日本では廃絶したが，朝鮮の雅楽では今日でも用いられている。日本には正倉院に9枚の鉄板が残欠として残っており，これと，諸文献の記述をもとにした復元品も製作されている。
