A strait located in western Kumamoto Prefecture between the northern tip of Amakusa Shimoshima and the southern tip of the Shimabara Peninsula. It is about 4.5 kilometers wide and is the entrance to Shimabara Bay. The tidal currents are fast and whirlpools are prominent, so there is the Gotsusho Lighthouse in the center of the strait and the Sezumesaki Lighthouse on the Shimabara side. There is also a ferryboat operating between Oniike Port in Itsuwa-cho, Amakusa City on the Amakusa side and Kuchinotsu Port in Kuchinotsu-cho, Minamishimabara City on the Shimabara side. It is also called Hayasaki Strait or Sezume-no-Seto. [Yamaguchi Morito] [Reference] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
