Hayasaki Seto

A strait located in western Kumamoto Prefecture between the northern tip of Amakusa Shimoshima and the southern tip of the Shimabara Peninsula. It is about 4.5 kilometers wide and is the entrance to Shimabara Bay. The tidal currents are fast and whirlpools are prominent, so there is the Gotsusho Lighthouse in the center of the strait and the Sezumesaki Lighthouse on the Shimabara side. There is also a ferryboat operating between Oniike Port in Itsuwa-cho, Amakusa City on the Amakusa side and Kuchinotsu Port in Kuchinotsu-cho, Minamishimabara City on the Shimabara side. It is also called Hayasaki Strait or Sezume-no-Seto.

熊本県西部、天草下島(あまくさしもしま)北端と島原半島南端との間にある瀬戸。幅約4.5キロメートルで、島原湾の入口にあたる。潮流が速いうえ、渦潮の発達も著しいので、瀬戸中央に五通礁(ごつうしょう)灯台、島原側に瀬詰(せづめ)埼灯台がそれぞれ配されている。また天草側の天草市五和(いつわ)町鬼池港と島原側の南島原市口之津(くちのつ)町口之津港との間にはフェリーボートが就航している。早崎海峡、瀬詰ノ瀬戸ともいう。
