In Japan, it is commonly called Latin music or Central and South American music. When Europeans from Spain, Portugal, France, and other countries invaded the Americas and brought Africans to work as slaves, the music of the indigenous peoples (Indians), European music, and African music collided and fused in various ways to create the numerous musical styles collectively known as Latin American music. This can be broadly divided into two groups: Mestizo and Mulatto.

日本では俗に，ラテン音楽，中南米音楽ともいう。アメリカ大陸にスペイン，ポルトガル，フランスなどのヨーロッパ人が入り込み，さらに彼らが奴隷として使役するためにアフリカ人を連れて来て，先住民(インディオ)の音楽，ヨーロッパ音楽，アフリカ音楽の3者がさまざまに衝突し融合し，ラテン･アメリカ音楽と総称される数多くの音楽型式を作り上げてきた。そしてこれは，メスティソ系とムラート系の二つのグループに大別することができる。
