Bosboom-Toussaint, ALG (English)

...During this period (1795-1813) of national suffering in the Netherlands as a result of the French Revolution and its subjugation to France, Bilderdijk, who wrote such works as the lyric poem "Prayer" (1796) and the play "Floris V" (1808), played an important role as a pioneer of Dutch Romanticism.
[19th-20th century]
In 1837, Potthieter founded the magazine Gids under the banner of promoting a national literature based on liberalism, and the national romanticism movement flourished. Anna L.G. Bosboom-Toussaint (1812-1886) wrote such excellent historical novels as the trilogy The Count of Leicester (1846-1855) and The Sorcerer of Delft (1870). Meanwhile, Bates wrote the masterpiece of realistic humor, Camera Obscura (1839), and Multatulli published Max Havelaar (1860), a novel that denounced the inhumanity of the Dutch colonial policy. His passionate idealism and innovative style had a tremendous influence on modern Dutch literature.
