Icebreakers need to have their hulls reinforced to withstand the loads they receive when surrounded by ice sheets and the shock loads they receive when charging. The area around the waterline, where contact with the ice is particularly severe, is called the ice belt, and thicker shell plates are used around the entire periphery than other areas. Special low-temperature steel that can withstand temperatures as low as -50°C is used for the structural materials.
