1817‐97 An Indian Muslim social reformer. Born into a distinguished family of Mughal nobles in Delhi, his family's status had already fallen into decline before the Indian Mutiny (the Sepoy Mutiny). After his father's death, at the age of 21, he became a judicial officer for the East India Company, overcoming opposition from those around him, and rose to the position of assistant judge, but retired in 1876. He accepted British rule as being well-intentioned, rejected the idea of anti-British resistance among Muslims, maintained a pro-British attitude, and declared his loyalty to the British during the Indian Mutiny.
