A Middle Turkic language. A literary language developed in the 15th and 16th centuries under the Timurid dynasty. It was used as the common written language of the Turkic languages of Central Asia and influenced them to later generations. It was written in Arabic script. In terms of dialect classification, it is classified as a southeastern dialect of Turkic languages along with Uzbek and Uighur (Neo-Uighur), and these are sometimes collectively called Chagatai dialect or Uighur dialect.

中期チュルク諸語の一つ。 15～16世紀にチムール王朝で発達した文語。中央アジアのチュルク諸語の共通文字言語として後世まで使われ，それらに影響を与えた。アラビア文字で書かれた。方言分類上は，ウズベク語やウイグル語 (新ウイグル語) とともにチュルク諸語南東方言に位置づけられ，これらをまとめてチャガタイ方言とかウイグル方言とかということもある。
