A bulbous plant of the Iridaceae family (APG classification: Iridaceae) planted in autumn. It produces several sword-shaped leaves in autumn. From May to June, it produces a 30-50 cm flower stalk with 8 to 9 freesia-like flowers in spikes. It is not fragrant, but is suitable for cut flowers and potted plants. Native to South Africa. T. crocata Ker-Gawl, also known as the red-flowered iris, produces 7-9 flowers on a 45 cm flower stalk. Cultivars include the deep orange Incomparaville, the white White Beauty, and the pink Rosaline. T. hyalina Baker has a flower shape similar to that of crocata and produces pale orange flowers. It reproduces by bulb division and is planted around October. In warm areas, it overwinter outdoors, but in the Chubu region and north, it is grown in a pot in a frame or on a windowsill indoors. When the leaves die in summer, the bulbs are dug up, dried and stored. [Yoshiaki Hiragi May 21, 2019] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
