Tritonia - Toritonia

A bulbous plant of the Iridaceae family (APG classification: Iridaceae) planted in autumn. It produces several sword-shaped leaves in autumn. From May to June, it produces a 30-50 cm flower stalk with 8 to 9 freesia-like flowers in spikes. It is not fragrant, but is suitable for cut flowers and potted plants. Native to South Africa. T. crocata Ker-Gawl, also known as the red-flowered iris, produces 7-9 flowers on a 45 cm flower stalk. Cultivars include the deep orange Incomparaville, the white White Beauty, and the pink Rosaline. T. hyalina Baker has a flower shape similar to that of crocata and produces pale orange flowers. It reproduces by bulb division and is planted around October. In warm areas, it overwinter outdoors, but in the Chubu region and north, it is grown in a pot in a frame or on a windowsill indoors. When the leaves die in summer, the bulbs are dug up, dried and stored.

アヤメ科（APG分類：アヤメ科）の秋植え球根草。秋のうちに剣状の葉を数枚つける。5～6月、30～50センチメートルの花茎を出し、フリージアに似た花を8、9個穂状につける。芳香はないが、切り花や鉢植えに向く。南アフリカ原産。クロカタ種T. crocata Ker-Gawlはアカバナヒメアヤメともいい、約45センチメートルの花茎に7～9個の花を開く。品種に濃橙(のうとう)色のインコンパラビル、白色のホワイト・ビューティ、桃色のローザリンなどがある。ヒアリナ種T. hyalina Bakerはクロカタに似た花姿で、淡橙色花を開く。繁殖は分球により、10月ころ植え付ける。暖地では露地で越冬するが、中部地方以北では鉢植えにし、フレーム内か室内の窓辺で栽培する。夏に葉が枯れたら球根を掘り上げ、乾燥して貯蔵する。
