1925‐87 A leading director in the Soviet Union. After graduating from the Lunacharsky Theater University, he made a name for himself by staging works by V. Rozov at the Moscow Central Children's Theater from 1954, and was the chief director of the Lenin Komsomol Theater from 1963 to 1967. He has been the director of the Malaya Bronnaya Theater since 1967. He has made a great contribution to liberating contemporary drama from naturalistic socialist realism by emphasizing psychological experience while also using sharp symbolic directing techniques.
