Churui [village] - Churui

Japanese: 忠類[村] - ちゅうるい
Churui [village] - Churui
A village in Hiroo District, Tokachi Subprefecture, southeastern Hokkaido. Population 1,871 (1995). The name is said to be derived from the Ainu word Churui Toh Petsu, meaning a rippling swamp or rapids. Located in the southern Tokachi Plain, the village is surrounded by mountains 200-300m above sea level, with the flat land spreading along the Toberi River basin, which flows southeast through the center. Immigrants from Gunma Prefecture settled here in 1894. Dairy farming is the main industry, with some field crops being cultivated, and lily bulbs are a specialty product. In 1969, a fossil nearly complete with the skeleton of a Naumann's elephant was discovered in the late-maturing area of the eastern part of the village.
