A genus of the Asteraceae family that is widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere, consisting of about 400 species. Most species grow in the mountainous regions of East Asia, with 25 species in Japan. The "hiren" in "touhiren" is the Japanese kanji name used for the Japanese thistle, but the origin of the "tou" is unclear. Due to the difficulty of classification, names such as "higotai" and "azami" are used confusingly across several closely related genera. In the past, "touhiren" referred to S. tanakae Fr.et Sav.
