A city in the Komi Republic in the northern part of the Russian Federation. Population 116,000 (1992). In the 1930s, a prison camp was established in this far northern area near the Barents Sea, and prisoners worked in the coal mines. It is well known that a prisoner revolt occurred there after Stalin's death in 1953. It remains the center of the coal mining industry.
