…(1) In the early church, Jesus was initially referred to relatively simply in Jewish terms as the Christ (Messiah = the one anointed by God to become king) and the Son of God, and was believed to be the one who would return at the end of the world and complete the Kingdom of God. However, when Christianity left Palestine and entered the Hellenistic world, this understanding of Christ changed, and Jesus came to be regarded as a divine man in the mystical religions and called Kyrios (Lord). Although Paul used this name, he believed that Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection made him the Son of God, the Christ, and he spoke of the Son of David as the Son of God, following the adoptionism already seen in Judaism. …
